Critical Cities presents itself as a contemporary art and research programme that proposes the reflection and action concerning artistic production in its relationship with the city, in a dialogue with the social, historic and architectonic issues that constitute it, contributing for the documentation and understanding of the contemporary urban experience.
Critical Cities is based on the reunion and dialogue between artists, communities and agents that dwell and operates in today’s city, and represents a moment of critical debate between the urban transformation processes that Lisbon’s historic areas have undergone in the last decade, triggered by the increase of the tourist flows, real estate investment, among other phenomena, more or less localized. Under the curatorship of Sérgio Azevedo, young and consolidated artists thought and developed installations projects and a set of mediation initiatives, in close dialogue with the city, as an intervention upon the territory, seen as public and political space. Is inside of this context that Plano Lisboa presents in 2016 an open programme composed of interventions in the city space, exhibitions, free magazines, open talks and international documentaries between other public programmes.
